The RSPCA has launched a new Animal Welfare Evidence Centre aimed at improving understanding of the causes of animal cruelty and neglect and strengthening the evidence used to shape policy and prevention efforts.
The centre has been established in partnership with the Katherine Martin Charitable Trust and leading animal welfare organisations Four Paws, Compassion in World Farming and Humane World for Animals.
It will focus on research into the relationship between humans and animals and the factors that influence how animals are treated across areas such as food production, sport, fashion and entertainment.
Between 2026 and 2029, the centre will work with organisations across the animal welfare sector to bring together existing evidence, identify gaps in knowledge and commission new research.
Its stated aim is to support more effective interventions and long-term changes in attitudes and behaviour towards animals.
The means by which animal welfare intersects with wider social issues, including health, housing and public policy, will also form part of the centre’s work. The RSPCA said the approach recognises that challenges facing animals, people and the environment are interconnected.
Funding for the centre has been provided by the Katherine Martin Charitable Trust, with the donation forming part of Katherine Martin’s legacy. The funding was intended to support work that creates a safer and more compassionate society for animals.
The centre’s first research project will examine the economic costs of animal cruelty and neglect.
The study will assess the financial impact on individuals, public services, charities and government bodies, as well as the wider consequences for animals. The findings are intended to help build a case for greater investment in preventative measures.
Thomas Schultz-Jagow, director of advocacy and prevention at Humane World for Animals, said: “The Animal Welfare Evidence Centre is a critical opportunity to deepen our understanding of what drives humans to harm animals so we can lay the foundations for the truly transformational change we all want to see for animals.”
