Pet food manufacturer Homeland by Products has had to recall three products from its frozen raw food range, due to the presence of salmonella.

The 500g bags of Frozen Raw Beef, Frozen Raw Turkey and Frozen Raw Tripe, were all found to contain salmonella. The affected batch codes are 1510, 1513 and 1518 with a best before date of May 2021, the Food Standards Agency believe these are the only products to be affected.

Customers who have bought any of the products are urged not to use them, they should return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals, symptoms usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

An FSA statement said: “The product could carry a potential risk, because of the presence of salmonella, either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.

“When handling and serving raw pet food it is always advised to clean utensils and feeding bowls thoroughly after use. Consumers should wash hands thoroughly after handling raw pet food, bowls, utensils or after contact with the faeces of infected animals.”
