Shigezo Kamihata posthumously awarded 2018 OFI Award

Shigezo Kamihata, founder of Kamihata Fish Industries, has posthumously been awarded the 2018 Ornamental Fish International (OFI) Award for his pioneering work for the aquatic industry in Japan and internationally.

Kamihata passed away on 25 December 2017 at the age of 91.

His deep passion for fish lead to him founding the Kamihata Fish Group of companies which compromise of farms, import and export, as well as manufacturing of feeds and allied products through Hikari Aquatic laboratory. He was also an adventurer and led – as well as funded – many expeditions to remote locations around the world gathering information on rare species and discovering new species.

With this award, OFI recognises his lifetime contributions of dedication and development of the modern ornamental fish hobby, as well as the inspiration and legacy his group of companies leave to industry and hobbyists around the world.

OFI is an international trade association which has been representing the ornamental fish industry since its inception in 1980.

It represents members from more than 30 countries around the world, including the UK’s Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association, and includes members from all sectors of the industry (producers, exporters, importers and retailers) as well as a number of NGO’s and other trade associations.

Last year, OFI members have adopted its new charter guaranteeing the conduct of an ethical, fair and legal trade.
