Three million pet owners are expected to spend more on their animals than any other family member this Christmas, according to new research from Pets at Home.
The survey suggests pets will sit at the centre of many households’ festive plans, with owners adjusting spending, routines and even social commitments around them.
The findings indicate that one in three pets – around 6.4 million animals – will be the most indulged member of the household, and almost half of owners are preparing their celebrations with their pets’ needs in mind. 14% of respondents said they will miss gatherings with friends and relatives to stay at home with their animals.

The trend towards treating pets as full members of the family appears to be growing. More than half of owners plan to give their pet a dedicated Christmas present, while rabbits are set to be the most spoilt species, with 70% due a gift. Many animals will receive added touches such as specially cooked festive meals, stockings or themed outfits.
Household routines are also shifting to accommodate pets’ comfort. Some 30% of owners would remove their partner from the sofa to allow an animal the best seat, while nearly a quarter allow their pets to share their bed during the festive period. Grooming is another priority, with one in four booking their pet’s appointment before arranging their own haircut.
Pets also feature prominently in seasonal photographs. A quarter of owners say their pet appears in every family picture, and more than one in five take more photos with their pet than with anyone else. For some households, the pet is the only subject of the family Christmas card.
Ensuring animals feel safe and calm is a key concern. Three in five owners take steps to pet-proof their homes by hiding treats, choosing artificial trees, avoiding fragile decorations or securing their Christmas tree to prevent accidents.
Dr Samantha Butler-Davies, veterinary services director at Pets at Home, said: “In so many households pets are firmly at the heart of festive celebrations. From special gifts to planning Christmas around them, it’s clear how much love, joy and companionship they bring to families up and down the UK.
“As we increasingly integrate pets into our festive traditions, it’s more important than ever to provide a quiet space where they can retreat and relax. Choosing pet-safe decorations, introducing guests gradually, sticking to familiar routines and keeping an eye on their social cues can all help reduce stress and ensure they stay happy and calm throughout the entire festive season.”
