A rabbit was rescued from the roof of a bungalow in Omagh, County Tyrone on Friday morning. Bumper was catapulted to the top of a care home when his hutch was blown over during Storm Gertrude.
The local fire service rescued the pet, as the care home’s staff were unable to access the roof. Northern Ireland Fire Service’s Facebook page states: “one short extension ladder, one reach pole, and one particularly tasty carrot were used by personnel at the incident.”
David Doherty, the fire service’s district commander for Omagh, told the BBC that the rescue was: “something a wee bit different on a Friday morning”.
Bumper isn’t the first animal to suffer during the UK’s recent extreme weather. RSPCA teams in the north of England rescued 12 cats, eight dogs, six sheep, four rabbits and three chickens during the recent flooding. They also moved a mole to high ground, after it was discovered swimming against the current in a flooded Yorkshire street.
