The Pet Industry Federation has launched a sector-wide consultation regarding the future regulation of flea treatment products.

The move follows a call for evidence by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate into the environmental impact of fipronil and imidacloprid.

The federation intends to examine the practical realities faced by pet businesses and the potential impact on animal welfare before new decisions are taken.

Proposed changes could affect pet retailers, groomers and boarding establishments across the UK.

Questions remain over whether new restrictions would shift sales away from specialist retailers or reduce convenience for owners seeking preventative treatments.

The consultation includes separate surveys for different business types to shape a formal response to the government.

The trade body is also engaging with the National Office of Animal Health as part of a wider industry dialogue.

It stated that owner education will be a key component of any long-term solution to ensure responsible use of parasite control.

Nigel Baker, chief executive of the Pet Industry Federation, said: “This is an important issue with implications for businesses, pet owners and animal welfare. It is essential that policymakers hear from those working directly with pets and pet owners every day. We want to understand members’ views, concerns and practical experiences so that we can represent the sector in a balanced and constructive way.”
