Pet food and health brand Pooch and Mutt has expanded its scientific operations with a new laboratory at AberInnovation, the innovation campus linked to Aberystwyth University and its veterinary school.

The move brings the company’s BIOME9 laboratory work in-house, following Pooch and Mutt’s acquisition of the microbiome research firm earlier this year.

BIOME9 provides veterinary partners with microbiome testing services and underpins Pooch and Mutt’s at-home Gut Health Test for dogs.

The test uses microbiome analysis and artificial intelligence to identify current or potential health issues in pets, forming part of the company’s wider focus on data-led pet care.

Paul Dennison, chief executive at Pooch and Mutt, said: “This expansion strengthens our commitment to bringing even better pet care to owners. By investing in BIOME9’s in-house laboratory capabilities, we can ensure the highest level of quality control and deliver faster, deeper insights from our Gut Health Tests. It’s another major stride towards making good gut health accessible and actionable for every dog.

“This development also supports where we’re taking Pooch and Mutt in the future. We’re continuously improving our expertise, product portfolio and overall brand to offer the best, science-backed care to all dogs.”

The company said the new facility will improve accuracy and turnaround times while supporting ongoing research and product development. Two new bioscientists have joined the team as part of the investment, which will feed into a 2026 research programme aimed at extending microbiome testing to new sample types and species.

Pooch and Mutt said the move aligns with its long-term plan to combine nutrition, behavioural insight and science-based research to improve animal health and wellbeing.
