Katie Gwilt, founder of The Kat Lady pet groomer in Liverpool, is set to launch a new professional training programme in 2026 to transform grooming standards in the UK.
The course, titled Cat Grooming – The Kat Lady Way, is designed for individuals entering the animal care sector.
Gwilt, based in Garston, aims to prioritise feline emotional and physical limits over the industry’s traditional focus on speed and aesthetics.
The curriculum addresses the specific communication styles and nervous systems of cats, which Gwilt claims are often overlooked by groomers trained in canine techniques.
The programme focuses on consent-based handling and low-stress pacing.
Two versions of the course are available. Beginners will undergo 20 days of practical instruction, while experienced groomers can complete a five-day condensed programme. Most training will occur in mobile environments to simulate home-based care.
The course includes modules on feline anatomy, body language, and tool selection. Students will also receive instruction on reducing stress for pet owners and establishing a local grooming business.
Gwilt said: “Cat grooming isn’t just about claw trims or aesthetics. When it’s done properly, it’s about listening, observing and working with the cat in front of you, not forcing them to comply. A calm cat with half a groom is always better than a distressed cat with a full one.
“It improves outcomes for cats, builds trust with guardians, and helps protect groomers from burnout and injury.”
