Mars has become the first petfood company to commit to the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST) standard, pledging to implement full digital traceability across its seafood supply chains.
The company, which owns brands including Pedigree and Ben’s Original, has partnered with GDST-verified provider Wholechain to meet the global benchmark. The move is intended to enhance transparency and improve supply chain decision-making.
The digital traceability programme would support its corporate responsibility policies, while improving risk management and business resilience.
The system will track seafood from source to finished product using standardised data formats shared across different systems.
Wholechain’s platform, which is already in use across several commodities, will allow Mars to expand traceability efforts beyond seafood.
GDST is a global industry platform that develops standards for interoperability in seafood supply chains, with growing uptake from companies and investors seeking more sustainable and accountable sourcing.
Andrew Russell, global marine sustainability lead of Mars Petcare, said: “At Mars, we have been working for more than 15 years, in collaboration with WWF, to drive more responsible fish sourcing, and address the growing pressures on vulnerable ocean ecosystems.
“By joining the GDST, we are advancing our commitment to responsible sourcing and are proud to work with Wholechain to make meaningful strides in achieving end-to-end traceability across our seafood supply chains.”
Jayson Berryhill, chief executive of Wholechain, added: “Mars’ commitment to adopting GDST standards and prioritising traceability is a powerful example of industry leadership. We are excited to work with Mars to turn their commitment into action.”
“Companies with supply chains including non-seafood commodities – such as palm, soy, beef, chicken – are already exploring utilisation of the GDST Standard. The learnings Mars will be taking from implementing the GDST Standard for their seafood products is anticipated to help to drive wider adoption across multiple markets.”
