A pet shop owner killed a goldfish by unplugging the fish tank pump to charge his mobile phone.
Four other fish were saved from the aquarium after the pump was left without power.
Jewan Shikho, owner of Pets Place in Salford, has been banned for five years after breaching 23 conditions of his pet shop licence.
Shikho also kept birds in cramped make-shift cages with one parakeet laying dead in droppings at the bottom. Others had no perches so were clinging to the sides of the cages.
Inspectors found a baby rabbit with no water whilst three others roamed the mouse-infested floor with their hutches left open, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Another offence committed was that Shikho had no documentation to show where the animals had come from or who he had sold them to.
The pet shop owner pleaded guilty at Salford and Manchester magistrates court to failing to comply with pet shop licence conditions as prescribed under The Pet Animals Act.
He was ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid community work, his pet shop licence was revoked and he was disqualified for five years from keeping a pet shop.
He was also ordered to pay court costs and a victim surcharge totalling £940.
