The Scottish SPCA has revealed that it “desperately” needs donations in light of the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
The animal welfare charity has ceased rehoming after it made the “difficult decision” to close its nine animal rescue and rehoming centres, though its rescue officers and inspectors are still on the ground responding to calls to rescue injured wildlife.
For this reason, the charity is still in need of a selection of items across its centres, including pet food, collars, harnesses and disinfectant.
Hand sanitiser is also “desperately needed”, though the charity said that it “does not expect” this due to increased prices of the product across the market.
In light of government guidelines, the SSPCA has asked the public to donate food from its Amazon wishlists, rather than drop items off in person.
Animal rescue and rehoming Centre superintendent, Sharon Comrie, said: “This is a very difficult time for us. Our teams are working incredibly hard to continue to provide the animals with the care they need and to maintain their routine.
“Our helpline is still operating and our rescue officers and inspectors are still on the ground rescuing injured and abused animals across Scotland.”
She added: “Therefore, we will still have animals coming in with none being rehomed at this time. It can be a struggle to keep up with hungry mouths to feed.
“Due to the uncertain times right now, and people not being able to leave the house, we are receiving less donations than usual.”
