Pet food manufacturer Raw Treat Pet Food is recalling four batches of frozen raw pet food, after listeria monocytogenes has been found in the products.
The 500g bags of frozen raw beef, frozen raw chicken, frozen raw lamb and frozen raw chicken and tripe were all found to contain listeria. The affected batch codes are 1544, 1533 and 15145 and 15331547 with a best before date of June 2021, the Food Standards Agency said it believes these are the only products to be affected.
Customers who have bought any of the products are urged not to use them, they should return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals, the symptoms usually include flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.
An FSA statement said: “The product could carry a potential risk either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.
“When handling and serving raw pet food it is always advised to clean utensils and feeding bowls thoroughly after use. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw pet food, bowls, utensils.”
