The Animal Focused Alliance (AFA), the UK trade association for pet professionals, has been honoured at 11 Downing Street for its work within the animal welfare and the pet sector.

The reception, hosted by the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, commemorated the recent winners and finalists of The Small Awards and the vital position of small businesses generally within communities and the economy.

The AFA, founded in May 2025 represents pet professionals across the UK including dog walkers, groomers, home boarders and animal encounter providers. The alliance provides members with services such as legislation and licensing advice, expert webinars, free legal advice and exclusive discounts on insurance, training and products.

The alliance has been recognised for its strong growth and development, following two award nominations in the past 18 months, as it continues to promote the highest standards of animal welfare.

Founder Vicky Skinner said: “To be recognised in a national award in our first year is incredible in itself, but to then be invited to Downing Street was huge.

“We set up the Alliance because pet professionals so often run their businesses alone, without anyone to turn to on welfare, licensing or the law –and meeting people facing the same challenges was a real reminder that we’re all in this together.”

The reception has emphasised the importance of small businesses generally, with government plans aiming to reduce barriers, and support business growth. The UK has around 5.7 million small businesses, with around 80 celebrated at the reception.

Michelle Ovens CBE, CEO and founder of Small Business Britain, added: “Small businesses are vital to our communities across the UK and a major driving force behind the economy.

“It’s wonderful to see the success of the Animal Focused Alliance recognised by the chancellor and the Treasury at No11 Downing Street. Backing small businesses has never been more important, and we must continue to ensure they have the support they need to thrive.”
