Flavours and fragrances manufacturer IFF has launched PureStrong, a new probiotic created solely for dogs’ digestive health.
The product joins the company’s wider Howaru Pet range of canine and feline probiotic strains, supported by “microbiome science, quality manufacturing and clinical evaluation”.
IFF said it is building on “decades of leadership in probiotics and bioscience” to push pet health brands past trend-inspired formulations to precision wellness.
Contrary to many other probiotics on the market that mix generic bacteria strains for humans or livestock, PureStrong features a single targeted strain of Limosilactobacillus reuteri.
The strain comes from the canine microbiome and is subsequently able to survive, attach and compete in a dog’s gut.
IFF said using one strain also allows pet supplement brands to develop low-dose, highly specific products without added complexity, providing effective support that meets the biological needs of dogs.
The firm added that the strain is compatible with several commonly used delivery systems, including powders, capsules tablets and sticks, all while helping brands stand out uniquely.
The company said canine digestive wellbeing impacts almost every aspect of a dog’s everyday life, including comfort, hydration, nutrient absorption and immunity.
It added that PureStrong supports dogs’ digestive health at moments it is most vulnerable, for instance while undergoing diet alterations, travel, stress and aging.
In a controlled study by the company of healthy dogs experiencing a sudden change of diet, dogs given PureStrong indicated improved markers of digestive health and hydration and diet tolerance, resulting in firmer stools without constipation.
