Petgevity has partnered with Petscribers to give its policyholders access to tools designed to reduce the cost of pet prescription medication, as concerns continue to grow over affordability and transparency in the UK veterinary market.

The insurer, which is part of the Staysure Group, stated that it is the first pet insurance provider to work with Petscribers, a vet-founded platform that allows owners to compare prices for prescribed medication from government-accredited online pharmacies.

Under the partnership, Petgevity customers will be able to use Petscribers’ comparison service to find lower-cost options for ongoing or repeat prescriptions, helping them to preserve more of their insurance cover for unexpected treatment.

The move comes amid increased scrutiny of the veterinary sector. Last year, the Competition and Markets Authority said the market was falling short on transparency, highlighting that pet owners can often pay less for the same medication when buying online and that many are unaware they can request a written prescription to shop around.

Petgevity said medication accounts for around 40% of claims across its book, making it one of the largest components of routine veterinary costs for many policyholders.

The initial phase of the partnership will focus on directly connecting Petgevity policyholders with Petscribers’ existing comparison tools.

Further development is expected to include an integrated savings calculator and a more streamlined digital journey, with the aim of reducing claim sizes while improving the customer experience.

The collaboration was designed to address those issues by giving policyholders clearer information and access to accredited online pharmacies.

Petscribers said pet owners using its platform typically save between 30% and 50% on long-term or repeat prescriptions, potentially reducing overall insurance claims and helping to keep premiums sustainable over time.

Petscribers was founded by veterinary professionals and focuses on helping owners access prescription medication safely and at lower cost. Petgevity offers lifetime pet insurance products tailored to long-term cover as pets age.

Dr Emma Pemberthy, co-founder of Petscribers, said: “By helping owners save on regular medication, we’re protecting what really matters: their ability to afford care when their pet truly needs it.”

Kerry Willecome, head of marketing at Petgevity, added: “Our goal is to give owners confidence and clarity when managing their pet’s health, and partnering with Petscribers helps us do exactly that, without compromising safety or care.”
