Independent pet shop scoops top prize in Burns awards

A Kilmarnock pet shop has won £2,500 cash in a national competition ran by Burns Pet Nutrition for the best shop window display.

The independent shop, named Sommerville Feeds, has been running for over 38 years and beat off competition across the country to be crowned nationwide winners of Burns 25 Year Stockist Competition organised by pet food manufacturer, Burns Pet Nutrition, in celebration of its 25th anniversary.

Stockists up and down the country were invited to create a window display featuring the Burns brand and encouraging customers to vote for their entry on social media. Following a month of voting, Sommerville Feeds was announced as the overall winner at PATS Telford. Burns representative, Mark Oszczypala, visited the shop on Friday to present the prize.

Burns founder, and veterinary surgeon, John Burns said: “We have always championed the independent retailer over big corporations and wanted to give something back to the stockists that work so hard to promote our brand, even in this challenging retail climate.

“We have awarded 1 prize of £2,500, 1 prize of £1,000 and 3 prizes of £500 cash which we hope will be enjoyed by the winners.”

Podgy Paws of Keswick, Village Pets of West Kilbride, Angus Pets & Aquatics of Forfar and Petwise of Pontypridd, South Wales all followed Sommerville Feeds as cash prize winners.

Anne Torrance, owner of Sommerville Feeds said “We were overjoyed to win such a prestigious competition celebrating Burns’ 25 years especially as they have been at the forefront of ethically sourced holistic dog food. Top class customer service is at the heart of our family business, so we will be sharing the prize with our customers and wonderful staff.”
