Referral centre approved for residency programmes by ECVS
Paragon Veterinary Referrals, which opened 18 months ago has been approved as a centre for veterinary residency programmes by the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS).
The centre, in Wakefield, has moved quickly to sign up existing staff member David Barker as its first resident after receiving the news from the ECVS. The Linnaeus Group-backed centre has recruited seven diplomates since November 2018, with the increase in caseload and specialist expertise on site enabling it to successfully apply for the accreditation.
Paragon opened its doors in February 2018 following a £5m investment and now has specialists in emergency and critical care (ECC), soft tissue surgery, orthopaedics, oncology, medicine, neurology and anaesthesia and analgesia.
Barker said: said: “I am very happy to have the opportunity to complete my ECVS residency at Paragon as it really is a great environment to work and to study. Working with a dedicated team of specialists and supporting staff gives many opportunities to learn and develop as a surgeon and I am excited to continue to work here after the residency.
“Paragon is in the process of starting residency programmes in other disciplines and it truly will become a centre of multi-disciplinary veterinary science and education.”
Sophie Adamantos, clinical director and ECC specialist, Paragon, added: “To be approved for a residency programme, you have to prove you can support the caseload required and provide the training which the residents will need, so we are naturally very pleased to have achieved this milestone.
“The accreditation shows we have the integrity and caseload to support the programme, which is a notable achievement for a new referral centre.”
