The proliferation of pet thefts has resulted in an internet-based pet retailer launching the first ever ‘Pet Theft Awareness Week’.
From 14 to 20 March, the inaugural Pet Theft Awareness Week will aim to help owners increase their vigilance when it comes to the security of their animals.
VioVet, the retailer behind the initiative, is using the case of Dawn Maw to highlight the Awareness Week. Maw was loading her dogs into her car after exercising them in a local park when Angel, her German short-haired pointer, was snatched and driven away in a white van.
A dedicated website has been set up containing a number of hard hitting animal theft-related posters for the internet-based campaign. The website also lists a number of measures owners can take to decrease their chances of becoming an animal theft victim.
Additionally, an e-petition has been created requesting the introduction of a pet theft law. “Several of our customers have had their pets stolen and we are noticing this more and more. It is a heart-breaking crime and we are happy to support this initiative,” said Richard Jordan of VioVet.
