Welsh pet brand start-up, ‘Project Blu’ has launched its partnership with Mars Petcare in a bid to reduce the environmental impact of pet products through a number of technologies.

Project Blu has created a range of fabric dog beds, cat beds, collars, leashes and toys are woven from recycled Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarn, and recycled cotton to create a strong, comfortable and sustainable product.

Having recently partnered with global pet health and nutrition leader Mars Petcare to jumpstart the marketplace launch of its innovative pet beds and accessories, Project Blu has secured a $200,000 (£158,000) investment from the global leader who owns over 50 global of the world’s biggest pet care brands.

Project Blu Founder, Geryn Evans, said “Our oceans bear the brunt of our plastics epidemic, with up to 12.7 million tons of plastic ending up in them every year. We are working to collect and manufacture high quality pet products from the mounting number of plastic bottles and discarded fishing nets already in our oceans, rather than make more.”

Each Project Blu pet product is manufactured from between 1 and 300 plastic bottles, and for each sale they pledge to clean a further one pound of plastic from our oceans and coastlines through the Plastic Bank.
