The Purina Institute has launched a new handbook aimed at helping veterinary professionals provide nutritional advice for healthy dogs and cats.
The Handbook of Canine and Feline Well-Pet Nutrition is a free, product-agnostic digital resource created with input from 54 experts across 20 countries.
It covers topics such as nutrient functions, life-stage nutrition, proactive dietary strategies and techniques for discussing nutrition with pet owners.
Designed as a practical reference for busy clinics, each chapter includes key takeaways, communication tips and visual aids.
The new guide follows the 2023 Handbook of Canine and Feline Clinical Nutrition, which focused on managing diet-responsive health conditions.
While 83% of vets recognise nutrition as essential to overall health, only 34% discuss it proactively with clients, according to Purina.
The new handbook is part of the institute’s efforts to encourage more frequent and informed nutrition conversations in veterinary practices.
Natalia Wagemans, global head of the Purina Institute, said: “Nutritional science has evolved significantly, and there are many facets to consider in a well-pet diet, not just from the pet’s perspective but also the owner’s lifestyle, budget and preferences. This resource simplifies the process of making informed recommendations and can be a vital tool for veterinary professionals.”
