Dogs Trust to hold Greyfriars Bobby commemoration event

Dogs Trust has invited dogs and owners to attend a special Greyfriars Bobby commemoration event in Greyfriars Kirkyard on 14 January.

The event aims to “showcase the bond between owner and dog through special activities such as training, playing, grooming and exercising”. It will be the second year in a row that it is held.

Dogs Trust officials will give speeches on canine welfare at the event, and training advice will also be given to pet owners. The campaigns team will also provide free health checks, microchipping and responsible dog ownership advice. An agility course for dog owners will also be arranged.

The event is named after Greyfriars Bobby, a legend about the bond between an Edinburgh watchman, John Gray, and his dog. His Skye Terrier, Bobby, supposedly visited his masters grave every day until his death.

Jen Terris, campaigns manager for Dogs Trust in Scotland, said: “Not only do we want to commemorate the memory of Scotland’s most famous dog and the relationship they had with their owner; but we want to instil this type of unbreakable bond between other owners and their dogs.

“It is every dog owner’s worst fear that they should be separated from their pet, yet 70% of dog owners in Scotland aren’t aware that it is a legal requirement for their dog to wear a collar and tag, as well as having an up-to-date microchip.”

She added: “Ensuring they have all of these is the best way to ensure we are reunited with them should they ever go missing.

“At this year’s event Dogs Trust will be providing a host of resources and information which promote responsible dog ownership. We are looking forward to building on the success of last year’s event, which received really positive feedback from attendees.”
