London Vet Specialists launches oncology service for pets

The new service includes a newly equipped chemotherapy room designed to offer a calm and comfortable environment for pets receiving treatment

London Vet Specialists (LVS) has launched a new oncology department to treat pets diagnosed with cancer at its hospital in Hammersmith.

The Linnaeus-owned multidisciplinary hospital has appointed European diplomat Sofia Ramos to lead the service.

She is joined by lead oncology nurse Inge Breathnach, a registered veterinary nurse with veterinary technician specialist status in oncology, and a team of dedicated support staff.

The oncology unit is located in a low-traffic area of the hospital to minimise risk to immunosuppressed patients.

It includes a newly equipped chemotherapy room designed to offer a calm and comfortable environment for pets receiving treatment.

The service would also offer personalised treatment plans for pets, along with support for owners navigating cancer diagnoses.

Ramos graduated from the University Lusófona in Portugal before moving to the UK, where she specialised in oncology after completing internships and a residency at a referral hospital.

Breathnach, who has focused on oncology care since 2015, previously helped establish a similar service in Buckinghamshire.

Ramos said: “I am excited to be joining the team at LVS and launching the oncology service here, working alongside some hugely experienced and dedicated clinicians in other disciplines across the hospital.

“The team believes in a collaborative, supportive approach that puts the patient’s comfort and quality of life at the centre of everything we do.”

Breathnach added: “I am extremely proud to be working with such a passionate and patient-focused team to provide such exceptional cancer care.

“I have a deep passion for helping enhance quality of life for our patients and their families, inspired by my personal experience of losing my beloved Chihuahua cross, Erik, to cancer in recent years. One of my key ambitions is to help build a well-structured and collaborative oncology service that integrates effectively within the wider hospital team.”
