Barnard Brothers closes after 100 years of trading

An Ipswich pet shop has confirmed it will permanently close its doors after more than 100 years of trading.

According to the Ipswich Star, a sign in the window of Barnard Brothers has informed local residents it will close its doors on 31 July.

The original Barnard Brothers shop was opened in 1908 by the Barnard family, which sold animal feeds. The current premises was then acquired in 1935.

Since then, the business has been a specialist supplier of pet and animal foods, horse feed and equine supplies, as well as garden products.

The business was sold by the Barnard family in 1994, but continued trading under Barnard Brothers.

Managing director, Andrea Heath, told the Ipswich Star: “The lease is coming to an end at the end of the month. It’s very sad that it has come to an end after all these years.”

A local resident added: “I used to go there for dog and chicken feed when I was about seven or eight years old, that’s 60 to 70 years ago.

“I think we rode into our summer campsites in the back of a Barnards’ lorry. Again, another era coming to an end.”
