NPM urges pet owners to raise funds for welfare charities amid Covid-19 crisis

National Pet Month (NPM) is urging pet owners to take to social media to raise funds for welfare rescues and charities amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

NPM has joined with the Association of Dogs and Cats Home (ADCH) to put out a “sobering” message calling for help.

David Bowles, ADCH head of public affairs and trustee, said: “Although most of the country is on lockdown, animals still need rescuing, feeding, walking, taking care of – and all of that is extremely expensive.

“NPM said that charities had lost up to half their income due to postponed fundraising activities, but their vital work continues. Small charities are particularly at risk and “need our help now more than ever”.  

Michael Bellingham, NPM chairman, added: “In any other year, right now we’d be asking UK pet lovers to stage or attend events celebrating our life with our pets, spreading the word on their care and raising funds for National Pet Month, or a favourite local pet charity or rescue. 

“Supporting UK pet carers and rescuers is at the heart of what we do, and 2020 is no different in that regard. We’re asking pet owners to take to social media and use these online platforms to set up mini fundraisers for NPM and other UK pet charities and rescues between now and 10 May.”

The news comes as the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes survey has revealed that 95% of its members have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, as UK animal rescue centres have lost up to half of their income during the outbreak.

The Association of Dogs and Cat Homes (ADCH) announced their members were facing “huge staffing and funding pressures”, with nearly half admitting they may not survive the crisis. 

The survey also found that 95% of organisations had seen an impact on their work or ability to operate while over 90% have taken contingency measures to deal with coronavirus.
