Definitely not, Wood Green, The Animals Charity, who are urging animal-lovers to showcase their Christmas jumper triumphs and fails (the less tasteful the better) alongside their pets, and donate just £5 to help the charity buy the extra bedding, coats, jumpers and bedding it needs to keep hundreds of homeless pets warm.

The Cambridgeshire-based charity has four branches around the country and cares for more than 5,000 dogs, cats, small animals, horses and chickens every year.

Every day this winter its staff will be caring for more than 650 unwanted animals.

Sally Stevens, Director of Income Services for Wood Green, said: “This is a busy time of year for all our centres and, equally, a cold time. When you’re turning the heating up and pulling on your winter woollies, please spare a thought for the hundreds of animals in our care this Christmas.”

She added: “For the last few Christmases we’ve all seen family, friends and colleagues wearing their Christmas jumpers with pride.

“In the spirit of that enthusiasm, we’re calling on people to donate and help us keep our residents cosy, or get knitting for your furry friends and donate the money you save, rather than buying a pre-made pet-jumper or coat.

“We would love to see your pets wearing your knitted creation this Christmas”

Wood Green supporter and Hollyoaks star Ali Bastian recently hosted the charity’s 90th anniversary activities.

She said: “As an animal-lover and a dog owner, I love the idea of translating the Christmas jumper obsession across to pets, and I’ll certainly be getting some knitting needles out this season to have a go.

“Wood Green does such terrific work throughout the year in rehoming some 5,000 animals, and this is a fun campaign which raises awareness of those efforts and keeps many more animals warm and cosy for the festive season.”
